Auto Glass ADAS Calibration. What It Is and Why It Matters. A BC Driver's Guide

Modern vehicles use cameras, radar and other sensors to power safety features like lane keeping and automatic braking. After a windshield replacement or collision repair, those sensors often need calibration, so the systems aim correctly again. Kirmac performs manufacturer-specified calibrations and backs our workmanship with a Limited Lifetime Guarantee.

What is ADAS?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are the smart features that make driving safer and less stressful.

Common examples include:

  • Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking

  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist

  • Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

  • Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Attention Monitoring

  • 360° Surround View and Parking Assist

Many of these features rely on a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield, plus radar or ultrasonic sensors in the grille, bumpers or mirrors. If a sensor sits a few millimetres out of position, the system can misread distance or lane lines.

What is ADAS calibration?

Calibration is the precise process of teaching your vehicle’s sensors what “straight ahead” and “correct distance” mean in the real world. Using manufacturer-approved tools, targets and diagnostic software, technicians align each camera and sensor so the vehicle’s computer can trust the data it receives.

There are two primary methods manufacturers specify:

  • Static calibration – Done in a controlled shop space with special targets placed at exact measurements. Common for windshield cameras and front radar.

  • Dynamic calibration – Performed on the road with a scan tool connected while the vehicle learns correct references at set speeds and distances.

  • Many vehicles require a combination of static and dynamic steps. Kirmac follows the exact procedure for your make and model.

When is calibration required?

You should expect calibration any time sensors are moved, replaced or their relationship to the road changes.

Typical triggers include:

  • Windshield replacement or camera bracket removal

  • Front or rear bumper repair or replacement

  • Collision repairs that affect panels, frame, suspension or wheel alignment

  • Ride height changes or steering and alignment work

  • Sensor or camera replacement, or when diagnostic trouble codes are present

  • Airbag deployment or specific resets such as a battery reconnect on certain models, per manufacturer procedures

A quick stone chip repair usually does not require calibration because the camera isn’t removed or re-aimed, but we always confirm by VIN against the manufacturer's procedure.

Why calibration matters

Your safety features are only as good as their aim. Proper calibration helps ensure:

  • Systems work as designed – Automatic braking and lane assist rely on precise sensor inputs.

  • Dash lights and warnings stay off – Correct procedures prevent persistent ADAS or camera faults.

  • Insurance and warranty requirements are met – Many insurers and

  • automakers require documented calibration after glass or collision work.

  • Peace of mind – You know your vehicle will behave predictably when you need it most.

FAQs about ADAS and windshield calibration

Q: Do all windshield replacements need calibration?

A: Most vehicles with a camera on the windshield do. We confirm by VIN and follow the manufacturer’s process.

Q: How long does calibration take?

A: Timing varies by vehicle and procedure. Many calibrations take about 1 to 3 hours, though some are shorter or longer, especially when both static and dynamic steps are required.

Q: Will my insurance cover calibration?

A: In many glass claims, it is covered when required by the manufacturer. We can help you start a glass claim and coordinate the details.

Q: Can I skip calibration if there are no warning lights?

A: We do not recommend it. Some systems show no warning until a critical moment. Calibration verifies performance before you need it most.

Q: Do you calibrate after collision repairs too?

A: Yes. Changes to bumpers, suspension or wheel alignment often require sensor calibration as part of the repair plan.
